Vredehoek, Cape Town
This steeply sloping corner site located at the base of Table Mountain just above the City Bowl, is nestled in a mix of four and five storey apartment blocks, as well as a number of smaller single residential Victorian houses. We felt that the best way to address the slope and the varied context was to create a contemporary expression of the traditional ‘Row House’ in the form of four semi-detached units. We sought to promote a more engaging and active street edge – an urban response we feel is sorely missing in many newer developments. The stepping of the units down the slope creates an undulating roof scape that allows for skylights to each of the mezzanine levels framing picture views of Signal Hill.
