Our client bought a relatively dilapidated, yet historically very significant home on the slopes of Signal Hill in Tamboerskloof with a view to restoring, altering and adding a contemporary entertainment component to it. The alteration needed to be done with careful consideration of its original fabric, while the architectural expression of the contemporary addition needed to be designed so as not to compete with, but to complement the existing, and to clearly differentiate between the Victorian and contemporary. A central entertainment courtyard is created by the old and the new – a private sanctuary where our client, a design and architectural enthusiast, can appreciate his love of both historic and contemporary architecture. Given its heritage status as a Provincial Heritage Site, there was a rigorous approval and painstaking building process. Every detail needed careful consideration and implementation so as not to damage any of the original house. Carefully concealed within the fabric of the historic house, state of the art technology makes for a home rooted in the past, but one which accommodates for the needs and wants of a luxury, 21st Century lifestyle.
