This house sits on a quiet, steep cul-de-sac in Sea Point, Cape Town, and forms one of a series of terraced row houses – all of which are of significant heritage value. When our clients bought the house, their brief to us was to keep much of the building envelope intact on the street facing side, but to extend into a back courtyard to add a lounge on the ground floor, on top of which a deck was built adjoining an upper level bedroom. The upper floor was reconfigured to add an additional bedroom. In addition to these structural changes, all finishes throughout the house were replaced and modernised – the result being an urban house, with a palette of contemporary materials complimenting what is a building of great heritage significance.
